Granny Squares Galore
The humble granny square has been a stalwart of crochet since the 1890s. It dominated in the 1970’s in wearable fashion and homewares and has seen a revival over the last few seasons which seems set to continue. Easy to master and quick to complete, colourful granny squares make the perfect project for beginners and experienced crocheters alike.

Granny’s History
Granny squares are lace like squares that are crocheted in rounds working from the centre outwards. Traditionally made up of clusters of three treble crochet stitches. They date back to the 1880s when the outer edges were always worked in black.

Granny Square Tops
Throughout the Heritage Collection, designers from different decades have combined granny squares to make colourful tops in a variety of shapes from cute vests to long line cardigans.
The squares also lend themselves well to creating borders or stripes of interest.

Little Grannies
Children’s fashion didn’t escape the Granny Square treatment. Smaller grannies were used in patterns for little ones to add interest.

Granny’s Not Square
Even the name of these humble crochet squares might make you believe they were a conservative fashion choice but grannies have been used in daring, flirty designs too. It just goes to show that granny is more hip than square.
