Movie inspired fashion ushered in ultra-feminine silhouettes

The decade in which we established our Sirdar design house and turned to the movies for fashion inspiration. A glamorous ultra-feminine silhouette influenced clearly defined waists and exaggerated shoulders. Look out for the fashionable knitted swimwear too.

Beach-ready glamour 30s style

Before the creation of technical fabrics, swimwear was knitted. Wool provided elasticity for the close fitting shapes.

Sirdar swimwear patterns ensured budding starlets could maintain their cinematic glamour even at the beach.

Sleeveless designs allowed the wearer to top up their tan while all in one suits with shorts or fulsome briefs protected one’s modesty.

1930s Frilly Affair Hero

The golden age of frills

Sandwiched between the World Wars, the 30s was an era of escapism. It ushered in new attitudes to design and saw the blossoming of female designers Madame Vionnet, Coco Chanel and Elsa Schiaparelli.

The streamlined boyish silhouettes of the 20s were replaced with frills, bows and femine flourishes. Waistlines were more fitted and shoulders emphasised with puffy sleeve shapes.
